The article explores the theme of waiting through its varied expressions in the manuscripts of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, to emphasize the aspects related to written culture, its protagonists and its products. Through a small excursus among ancient codices, notary and judicial documents and handwritten letters, sources very different from each other in terms of age, gender and characteristics, it retraces various and polychrome scenarios and manifestations of expectation, capable of revealing the changing of perceptions and sensitivity, culture and mentality.
