Abstract

This paper examines several key texts from the years surrounding the centenary of Giacomo Leopardi’s birth, which fueled the debate between proponents and detractors of psycho-anthropological criticism applied to the poet. The analysis focuses specifically on how the works and figure of Leopardi were used to discuss the new balance emerging between literature and science during those decades, as well as the role that scientific culture was expected to play in literary criticism from that point forward.
